SBA rejects most self-prepared 8(a) applications the first time around.

SBA's official stance is that applicants can prepare their own 8(a) applications. But the reality is that after the initial screening, SBA rejects the overwhelming majority of self-prepared 8(a) applications, designating them as deficient and inadequate for processing.

If you decide to prepare and submit your own 8(a) application without expert help, you can pretty much count on that happening to you. As they do with nearly all such applications, SBA will archive your application and take no further action on your case.

SBA refers to this as "returning" an application. They do not actually deny the application - they just designate it as no longer active and move on to other pending cases.

But it puts you back where you started.

==> Why does SBA do that?.
